She's wearing my dress!

A while ago I stumbled upon this picture of Magda Gabor wearing this pretty dress. It's a bad quality image and I've scoured the internet trying to find another version of it to no avail. As soon as I saw the picture I gasped 'that's my dress!' Well.... I have what I believe, is exactly the same dress. I so wish the picture of Magda was in colour so I could see if it matches exactly!

Here's me in the dress, snapped a couple of months ago at Christmas. Don't you just love it when that happens in the vintage world? Its up there with finding an old advert for an item of clothing you own or seeing someone you know online on the other side of the world has an identical item of vintage as you.

I bought mine about 5 years ago from Beyond Retro on Cheshire Street for £75.00. Red velvet Anne Fogarty's don't seem to be particularly rare, as I've seen a few in different styles before. A quick internet search brought up these below, however she is still a sought after vintage designer who was known for making great quality clothing at affordable prices.

Anyone else had a similar experience with discovering an item of clothing in an old photograph matching something that you own?

  1. It feels almost serendipitous! How wonderful to find that photo. It's never happened to me, though I have often found dresses from the 70s and 80s in charity shops that my mother used to have! Gorgeous dress, you really suit the vibrant red x

  3. This is amazing! I had someone give me a vintage bicycle brooch as a parting gift last year, and a month or so later I saw a pic of the vintage mafia ladies attending a tweed run and someone in the photo was wearing my brooch!

  5. That's awesome! It's such a lovely dress. I did a bit of snooping and found an advertisement for a Disneyland charm bracelet I own, so that was neat.

  7. Jayne Mansfield's wedding dress is a copy of mine! Mine is red and I designed it myself, gave my mother in law a drawing and asked her to sew it. She was a pro tailor and did a fabulous job. Only difference is mine is red, Jayne's is white. But it was fun to see, since I did not know her dress until about 10 years after we got married. Lovely dress you have! :) And is that a Tiki bar?

  13. What a lovely dress, and how neat to come across a photograph of someone wearing what is surely the same design!

Just recently I had this very thing happen. I have a bright yellow 1940s dress with a very distinct embroidered design on the bodice; it doesn't have a label but I'm not sure if it was home-sewn. Anyway, I was randomly watching some color film footage from VJ Day, and I spotted the exact same dress on a woman walking in a crowd in Times Square. It was so neat to see the dress, and it really made me wonder if I had seen a glimpse of the original owner of my dress!
