Hope you are well on this fine Tuesday eve. I have just gotten home from my second Tap dancing class, and my feet are super tired! Tap is so much fun, and much more difficult than I remembered, but I haven't done it since I was 6 so I'll give myself a break!
Getting Speccy
I have had to wear glasses when on computers and reading for about four years, but I'm a bit naughty and don't always wear them when I should be. As a result (or perhaps its just ageing) my eyes have gotten worse, and rather than just get a new prescription put into my current frames, I thought I'd treat myself to some new ones just in time for my new job. The pair I have had for a couple of years are reproduction lucite cats eyes glasses from Opera Opera. This is a really great shop in Covent Garden that sells spectacles from almost any decade you can think of, both vintage and reproduction. Unfortunately though, it's not cheap. This pair set me back more than £200! At the time I saved up for them and I do love them so, but I felt that it was time for a new style.
The High Street opticians in the UK, I personally think, have an appalling choice of frame styles. At work I see people from all over the world. I have noticed that French and American people often have really unusual and stylish frames, all different colours, shapes and period styles. In Britain everyone seems to be wearing the same rectangular frame with wide arms in garish colours. But fear not my ocularly challenged vintage loving friends! There are some fabulous frames out there for you.
As you can see, I have gone for a much more 1940s frame. They are really delicate and round, and (excuse the horrible yellow photo) a lovely mottled red and brown. I took the risk of buying them online, but cheekily went into Opera Opera before hand and tried on similar styles (that I can't afford!) to ensure that they suited me first. The brand is Anglo American and I bought them from Retrospecs for roughly £100 less than it would have cost me for a similar style at Opera Opera. Whaddayathink??
Another great online shop to buy glasses is Dead Mens Spex. They have a really great choice of vintage frames at excellent prices. You may have seen them mentioned before on Diary of a Vintage Girl as Fleur has a beautiful pair from there. They also have an ebay shop.

Of course you can buy vintage frames on ebay, in charity shops and at car boot sales. You may even find an old pair of Granny's lying around in the attic, and you can simply get your prescription put into them. This is a cheap option. I also know people who have gone abroad to buy glasses because it is much cheaper and as I said before, there is much more choice.
Do you have vintage glasses or know where you can find good reproductions?
Cheerio! J.x

As a matter of fact, I just got 2 new pair from zennioptical.com.

ReplyDeleteYour specs are fab I have 2 pairs of cat eye ones and one horn-rimmed from the 50's.

Oh how i long for actual catseye glasses. My mom works in an optometrist's office and I get great deals on specs and contacts, but her shop doesn't carry any vintage inspired ones. Yours look swell!
ReplyDeleteall of these glasses are so adorable!!

I love them all!! Fabulous! I have the tres noir cat eye shades and i adore them!
ReplyDeleteLove the new specs very flattering. I am in the market myself I used to get a lot of my frames from Allyn Scura on line but seems so many are sold out lately. I tried asking them about size option and they replied with a have to try them on. From an online shop they definitely didn't offer free shipping. Lately I have just been going to ebay.
ReplyDeleteI have always been into fun eyewear, long before I ever started wearing vintage frames. My favorite standbys were actually a pair my mom picked up at a thrift store sometime in the early 80s for costume wear! Fortunately she was kind enough to mail them to me several years ago so I could put lenses in them.
ReplyDeleteI still haven't bought any frames online as I'm a bit scared about sizing, but there are so many amazing pairs out there!
How funny. My latest post on my blog is about my deadstock glasses! There is a WONDERFUL guy that is a vendor at Pasadena rose bowl flea market. His name is Allyn Scura. He has his own line of repros as well as a GIANT selection of deadstock vintage glasses. He also will put the vintage green sunglass lenses in them !! Check out my blog for the link! BTW love the clear lucite ones!
ReplyDeleteCute! Mine are from Ray Ban and are a bit 30s so i'm glad i manage to find them. Don't wear my contacts so often because i love my glasses :D
ReplyDeleteI despair of the choice on the UK high street, they all look the same! I am definately starting to suffer from the aging effect and am just having reading glasses done, but have had to plump for high street for the cheapness factor, although no one of course will see me in them ;o)
ReplyDeleteI sadly don't suit cats eye ones which I despair about! I know when I eventually need them more I will be on the hunt for some vintage frames.
The ones I wear now have a retro "feel" - but I long for something authentic. I have often looked at dead mans - but did not want to order and then find that the ones I have chosen do not suit me :(
ReplyDeleteI have 5 pairs of glasses! 2 pairs of retro look Vivienne Westwood ones, a cheap high street red pair with polka dot arms, a pair of cats eyes from Dead Mens Spex and the best ones - some original 50s catseyes that I got from a charity shop for 25p! Agreed the high street is rubbish. I buy mine online and get the lenses put in.
ReplyDeleteI have a pair of metal rose pink cat eye glasses, which i got from ebay a couple of years ago for less then £50, I had to pay £50 to get lenses put in, but i think my eyes have got worse :( I wear a cheappy pair just to watch the TV with, as i am terriably clumsey. Also my vintage ones are a bit heavy. Has anyone else found vintage ones to be heavy? I have got my eye on these....

Next pay day :)
Retrospecs have their main shop in St Albans if you did fancy trying before buying, only 15 mins from London and a pretty nice place to visit...

Oooh, those are lovely!
ReplyDeleteI only wear glasses 2 days a month when I take a break from my contact lenses so I have the standard thick black frames from specsavers £29 range as there's no way I can justify spending £100 on new glasses!
You're right though, there is a real lack of different style.
Love those new ones on you!! they really suit your face perfectly! Even better than your old ones.
ReplyDeleteLove your new ones, I prefer those to your old ones! I have a old 50's pair of NHS glasses that I've been meaning to get lenses fitted but I am avoiding shedding out the £60 price! Eurgh xx
ReplyDeleteOh, how fun - I love vintage glasses! You look great in both pairs, actually. But the darker frame was a good choice.
ReplyDeleteI wear contacts all the time - and haven't purchased a pair of glasses in years. When I'm desperate to give my eyes a rest from the contacts, I pull out a pair of octagon wire frame glasses that I wore back in the 70's! They are so ugly & too small for my face - but I keep them for sentimental reasons. Silly, huh?
Your glasses are cute.I have some little tortious shell style ones I love and they are wearing out.I am dreading the day I have to get new frames.I also wear contacts but so use to glasses it's hard to switch.Well now I know where to get new frames when it's time to retire my old ones.thanks
ReplyDeleteYou are so smart!! Those frames look great. I wear contact lensees in different colors, as well as plain old corrective ones, but never leave home without shades (sunglasses!) and have probably wwaayyy too many pairs...
ReplyDeleteHOW DO YOU DO… specs
ReplyDeleteHelp him! The Bionic Man needs his micro fibre lens cloth or he will almost certainly not see the impending incoming Global Holocaust! What? It was just a fat fly and a bit of gravy. Well good job you incinerated it and saved us from that erm fly, cheers, in future Bionic Man can we just call you man...
