But I'm not a knitter......am I?

I know how to knit....sort of. I have knitted countless scarves, blankets, basically simple things that do not require me to be able to read patterns. However, since I have been blogging and reading other peoples blogs, I have grown jealous of all the marvellous women out there who can knit up a storm and create the most darling things, all by their own hand. My biggest inspiration to give knitting a proper chance is my fabulous gal Lisa. She is a wonder, and seeing her wear her lovely knits has made me very jealous indeed. Not long ago she knitted the 3 hour sweater and mentioned that it is probably a good beginners pattern. My friend Bethan, who like me, is a novice knitter, came back from a couple of weeks at her folks over Christmas wearing the 3 hour sweater that she had made herself. So, I thought, sod it, I'll give it a go.

As Marty McFly once said,
If you put your mind to it, you can accomplish anything

Look what I did!

Ok so it's far from perfect. For a start I buggered up a bit of the ribbng at the back and then I couldn't find a nice button and just sewed this grey one on until I could find a nicer one. There weren't many holes, just some gapey bits from the sewing up that I had to sort out.

Today I remembered that I have this amazing vintage V for Victory button with a tiny dot dot dot dash morse coding on the bottom, so now I'm going to swap the button over.

Sorry, bad picture...but amazing button!

Speaking of knits, the other week at work I remarked that I needed some new warm gloves as I lost one of mine. A lovely friend of mine who has worked at the museum for 26 years, since it opened remarked 'I'll knit you some!' I told her that she didn't have to but she insisted. Then today she showed up at work with these

How lovely! She is so sweet...and so are the gloves. They are a lovely soft pink with cream detailing, and they are really warm and cosy!

Well I hope I have inspired other novice knitters to give it a go! There are so many lovely knitters out there in blogland who would be willing to answer any questions and give you advice, I'm sure. Good luck!

You can find the 3 Hour Sweater pattern here

  2. The sweater came out great! That fab button will be a cute little addition too. So I totally think you're ready for the knit-along I'm running! I swear your first knit sweater is like a stepping stone to a whole new knitting world, and you'll be a pro at it before you know it. :)

And your co-worker is so sweet to knit you those mittens, they're adorable. Mittens are something I always pine over and never ever knit myself... so many annoying little fingers!

  4. Very nice! Knitting is one of those things I can't do. I did knit half a scarf once, then got bored.

  18. This is lovely! Can't wait to see what you knit next!
You may already use Ravelry but in case you don't, it is brilliant for inspiration, not to mention vintage patterns. x

  19. Hi. I'm looking at the pattern, also in the same situation as you (will knit anything so long as it's a scarf), and it says it's a size 16. Is it terribly difficult to make it a smaller size?
    Thanks.

  20. Miss Rosie: It is a vintage size 16 which roughly translates to a modern UK size 10, so 34" bust. x

  21. That's brilliant! I'm so jealous!

I got a how to knit book and DVD for Christmas, I have knitting needles and I got some wool to practice with in a charity shop last weekend. I plan to have a square by some time in August :D

  25. Fantastic jumper! I wished my first jumper project looked like that (even my current ones!) Fabulous button too- never seen one of those before (gasp!)
As for your new gloves- that’s soooo sweet… mind you there are a lot of lovely people that work at the CWRooms *wink, wink!* Tups x
P.S. what thickness of yarn did you use?
